It's been awhile...

I have to start by apologizing for the time lapse since my last post.  The snow storm really threw me off and I have been CRAZY busy getting all of our Dr. Seuss activities ready for next week!  I have a few pictures of our Presidential work from last week as well as our most recent set of center for you :)

We learned that being President is a BIG job!

We all had thoughts on what the President does at work.
Lots of original ideas!
We had great ideas about what we would do if we were President.
Too sweet!

Seeing who can collect all their  snowman parts first reading sight words.
Sorting those tricky blends at the word work  center.

Recording our observations of Gobstoppers in water.
Listening to a story and looking for words we can read.
Using our leveled readers to read with a group and then responding to the story.
Matching pennies to make groups of ten.
Completing sentences with number words.
The ever popular trace, write, stamp with our new see through stamps from Lakeshore Learning!

I am SO excited for all the "Seussy" fun we are going to have next week, check back here for pictures!  Have a great rest of the week!

Friends, Science, Presidents, and New Centers...Oh My!

I am SO excited for this upcoming week at school!  We will be starting all new centers, continuing our work with money, and beginning a three week unit on Presidents!

I have a few pictures of some of our work from last week.  First up is are some shots of the boys and girls working in the "Friendship Writing Journals".  I have been using the month of February, and Valentine's Day, as   an opportunity to talk about our good friends and ways to be a good friend.  I also posted a few pictures from our experiments that we did to learn more about physical and chemical changes.
We have been spending our writing block  working in our "February Friends" Journals.

Brainstorming adjectives to describe our friends.
We have been working hard to expand our adjectives vocabulary away  from  words like "nice" or "good".
We predicted which changes would be chemical or physical.  After doing the experiment, we determined if our prediction was correct and then moved the Post-It if we needed to.
Our mini science lab with a few of the physical and chemical change experiments we are still keeping an eye on.
Almost all of us said that this was a chemical  change because you can't take the salt out of the water.  We're going to keep an eye on it for a few days.  I can't wait for the discussion we will have about evaporation after this experiment has run its course!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!  Enjoy your day off tomorrow!

Valentine's Day

What fun we had at our Valentine's Day party yesterday!  I want to say a BIG "thank you" to all the parents who helped with the party, the kiddos had a blast!

In honor of Valentine's Day during our reading block we read a book called "A Special Kind of Love".  The students responded to the story by making text-to-self connections, writing about special ways you show love to them!

Here's what they came up with:

"My mom takes me to the store."
"My mom and dad buy me Puffles!"
"My mom gives me presents on my birthday.  She lets me buy Puffles."
"My mom tucks me into bed."
"My daddy drives me to school."
"My dad gets me Puffles." (Are you seeing a theme? haha)
"My mom gives me hugs and kisses and my dad brings me to the fire station and gives me rides on the fire truck.  He lets me play on the fire trucks."
"My mom brought me to the mermaid play."

I will try and post a few pictures of these journal entries, as well as our Kente cloth art projects, and the Silent e activity we have been working on in small groups later this week!!

My First Post!

Hi Parents!

I was inspired by my friend, Mrs. Webster, to create a blog giving you an inside peek into our days at school.  I will post stories, information, and pictures of projects and activities we have done at school.  Happy reading!
